Omar Fakhoury primarily works with painting, although he also explores video installations and site-specific urban sculptures and interventions. His work concentrates on Lebanon’s complex political and urban fabric, with an interest in public space and the elements marking territories. He is currently a lecturer at the Lebanese University.
Self-Defense (2012 – ongoing)
In his Self-Defense series, which sees him paint roadblocks, checkpoints, and barrels, Omar Fakhoury seeks to “archive the present” and address “the unfinished business” of the Lebanese wars. He has been researching political monuments in Lebanon and how their shapes and meanings change with the times. “In every corner of this country, there is evidence of a conflict that is ongoing.”
